Lions and contamination: Monotone clearings

چکیده
We consider a special variant of pursuit-evasion game called lions and contamination. In graph whose vertices are originally contaminated, set walks around the each lion clears contamination from every vertex it visits. The contamination, however, simultaneously spreads to any adjacent not occupied by lion. study relationship between different types clearings graphs, such as which do allow recontamination, where at most one moves time step forbidden be stacked on same vertex. answer several questions raised Adams et al. while the rest just watch. Communal cub rearing confers substantial benefits: groups of mothers can successfully defend their cubs against an infanticidal male, whereas a lone female has no chance one-on-one. But most other felids — for example, leopards, cougars, tigers, bobcats and lynx — are also infanticidal, yet they are all solitary. The true hallmark of lion sociality is their joint defe...
متن کاملLions, Conflict and Conservation
Although we have no reliable data on Africa-wide lion populations prior to the late 20th century, there is wide agreement that numbers have been in steady decline, and are no doubt at an all-time low; estimates based on local experts’ best guesses and estimates range between 16,500 and 47,000 (Chardonnet, 2002; Bauer and van der Merwe, 2004). Lions have been totally eliminated in North Africa, ...
متن کاملImpacts of roads and linear clearings on tropical forests.
Linear infrastructure such as roads, highways, power lines and gas lines are omnipresent features of human activity and are rapidly expanding in the tropics. Tropical species are especially vulnerable to such infrastructure because they include many ecological specialists that avoid even narrow (<30-m wide) clearings and forest edges, as well as other species that are susceptible to road kill, ...
متن کاملMonotone and Near-Monotone Systems
This paper provides an expository introduction to monotone and nearmonotone biochemical network structures. Monotone systems respond in a predictable fashion to perturbations, and have very robust dynamical characteristics. This makes them reliable components of more complex networks, and suggests that natural biological systems may have evolved to be, if not monotone, at least close to monoton...
متن کاملMonotone Operations and Monotone Groups∗
We survey an algebraic approach to proving impossibility results in distributed computing. The approach is emerging around monotone groups, a new class of algebraic groups we define here as a tight suit to monotone Read&Modify&Write (or RMW) operations in a distributed system. The yields of this approach have been the first impossibility results for implementations of monotone RMW operations th...
